World Cancer Day: 4 things women should do to prevent from getting the disease

The Indian Society for Clinical Research (ISCR) in its report on Wednesday said that cancer is the second biggest killer after heart disease in the country, as it 3.5 lakh people die from cancer per year.

With women almost making up almost half of the country's population, it is important that they take preventive measures to avoid getting cancer. One in eight women in India are being diagnosed with breast cancer. By 2020 the number of women suffering from it is expected to double."

Breast cancer and cervical cancer are the most common types of the disease affecting women in India. It is closely followed by uterine and oral cancer.

Following are some of the measures that women can take to avoid getting cancer.

Maintaing a healthy body

Maintaing a healthy lifestyle by eating healthy food and exercising will help prevent cancer. As breast cancer is linked obesity it helps women to keep an eye on the lifestyle factors that lead to the condition. Habits like smoking which can lead to oral cancer too must reduced or stopped all together to prevent the illness.

Maintain a healthy lifestyle, avoid addictions such as smoking and prevent getting obesity as it will help lowering your risk to cancer.

Eating a low carbohydrate- low fat- high fibre diet, bringing under control certain habits that lead to poor health, certainly reduces the risk of getting cancer.

Avoiding high-risk behaviours

In case of cervical cancer, oral cancer, certain behaviours if stopped can help preventing you from getting the illness. High-risk behaviour like sexual activity with multiple partners, excessive indulgence in alcohol and smoking can lead to cancer.

Getting immunised

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a sexually transmitted virus that can lead to cervical and other genital cancers while Hepatitis B can increase the risk of developing liver cancer. So it is vital that women too vaccinate themselves against these viruses.

Doctors also recommended women go vaccinate against cervical cancer. "It is ideal that girls in the age of 12-18 vaccinate themselves. It known to prevent cervical cancer in 70% of the women who vaccinated themselves.

Getting regular health check ups

Regular health check-up will help in the detection of cancer if present at an early stage helping in its successful treatment. Women should regularly test for breast and cervical cancer.
